Statointero
Luogo e cronologiaSalentino - Tomb. 6. End of the 4th / early 3rd century BC

The krater is a wide-mouthed container with a large body, used to mix wine with water, according to the Greek custom of not drinking pure wine in order to avoid getting drunk.
The particular shape with volutes, in which the handles rest upon spiralling coils on the edge of the vase, is used for very large monumental vases.
In use from the first half of the sixth century BC it continues with some variations up to the IV century BC.
This spiral krater represents a "simple" medium-sized example, devoid of decoration, like most of the objects found in the grave goods of the original tomb.
