Votive terracotta objects are usually found inside tombs of young women or children but are not found in the graves of adult males.
Clay figurines inside child entombments are interpreted as toys.
Some objects such as dolls, fruit and statuettes of animals or children riding on animals are also understood to be toys, thanks to the presence of small stones contained inside which, when upon shaking the statuette, tinkle like an actual rattle (tintinnabulum).
This statuette depicts a boy astride a dog.
The childlike figure is identifiable with the child-god Eros riding a dog or a pig, as has often been found in children’s grave goods.
