The use of perfume seems to have developed starting from the VII century BC among the Middle Eastern communities then spread to Greece and to all the cultures that followed its influence, such as the Peucetian culture. The widespread use of ointments and perfumes is evidenced by the vascular paintings and the findings of ceramic and alabaster containers.
Women used cosmetics and rouge made from plants, animal substances or elements of mineral origin, as well as perfumed oils for the body. It seems that some men also used cosmetics as well as ointments and oils. For body care products, small containers in ceramic, glass paste or glass were used. The fragrant essences were macerated in an oily substance (usually olive oil), filtered and purified before being stored in small containers. These containers had a narrow nozzle to allow for a gradual pouring of the contents at the time of use.
